SUMMARY:Obtaining bi-Lipschitz stratifications using valued fields
DESCRIPTION:(Work in progress\, together with Yimu Yin)One tool to describe singularities of (e.g. algebraic or analytic) subsets X of R^n or C^n are stratifications: a partition of X into finitely many ?Roestrata?R such that any two points x\, y in X within the same stratum have the ?Roesame type of neighbourhood?R. The most classical stratifications are Whitney stratifications\, which classify neighbourhoods up to homeomorphism. The strongest known stratifications are Mostowski’s bi-Lipschitz stratifications\, which classify neighbourhoods up to a bi-Lipschitz map. I will present a new way of obtaining such bi-Lipschitz stratifications\, by working in a suitable valued field (a non-standard model of R or C). Up to recently\, the existence of bi-Lipschitz stratifications was only known for sub-analytic sets. Our method works for definable sets in arbitrary polyinomially bounded o-minimal expansions of R\, i.e. in particular for quasi-analytic sets. (A similar result has also been announced by Valette.)

DESCRIPTION:Motivés par des questions topologiques\, nous présentons plusieurs problèmes sur les intersections singulières de sous-groupes algébriques et de sous-variétés dans les tores multiplicatifs. Ces questions sont étroitement liées aux conjectures de Zilber-Pink. L’heuristique sous-jacente est que\, dans ces conjectures\, la singularité des intersections peut compenser une décrémentation de la codimension des sous-groupes considérés.Il s’agit d’un travail en commun avec J. Marché.

DESCRIPTION:Une théorie est NIP si et seulement si certains espaces de types sont des `compacts de Rosenthal’ : des objets étudiés en topologie et théorie descriptive des ensembles. Grâce à cette observation\, on peut appliquer des résultats de topologie générale pour obtenir de nouveaux (et d’anciens) théorèmes sur les théories NIP. Je parlerai en particulier de conséquences concernant les types invariants.

SUMMARY:Some applications of model theory to geometric Ramsey theory.
DESCRIPTION:In a series of papers by Alon\, Conlon\, Fox\, Gromov\, Naor\, Pach\, Pinchasi\, Radoi\, Sharir\, Sudakov\, Lafforgue\, Suk and others it is demonstrated that families of graphs with the edge relation given by a semialgebraic relation of bounded complexity satisfy much stronger regularity properties than arbitrary graphs\, and can be decomposed into very homogeneous semialgebraic pieces modulo a small mistake (for example the incidence relation between points and lines on the real plane\, or higher dimensional analogues). We show that in fact the whole theory can be developed for families of graphs whose edge relation is uniformly definable in a structure satisfying a certain model theoretic property called distality\, with respect to arbitrary generically stable measures rather than just the counting ones. Moreover\, distality characterizes these strong regularity properties. This applies in particular to definable graphs in all o-minimal and weakly o-minimal theories\, and in p-adics.Joint work with Sergei Starchenko.

SUMMARY:Degrees of strongly special subvarieties and the André-Oort conjecture.
DESCRIPTION:We give a new proof of the André-Oort conjecture under the generalised Riemann hypothesis. In fact\, we generalise the strategy pioneered by Edixhoven\, and implemented by Klingler and Yafaev\, to all special subvarieties. Thus\, we remove ergodic theory from the proof of Klingler\, Ullmo and Yafaev and replace it with tools from algebraic geometry. Our key ingredient is a lower bound for the degrees of strongly special subvarieties coming from Prasad’s volume formula for S-arithmetic quotients of semisimple groups.

DESCRIPTION:To every right-angled Coxeter G group belongs a unique countable Tits building B(G) with infinite residues. Using a suitable language\, we study the first order theory of B(G). SUMMARY:Non-archimedean Yomdin-Gromov parametrizations and points of bounded height
DESCRIPTION:In the spirit of work by Pila-Wilkie (2006) and by Pila (2009)\, we will present bounds on the number of points of bounded height in the non-archimedean context. An important tool to make the determinant method work is provided by a non-archimedean version of the Yomdin – Gromov parameterizing lemma. We wil explain these results\, obtained in joint work with G. Comte and F. Loeser.

SUMMARY:Galois equations on torsion points and the Tate-Voloch conjecture on p-adic fields
DESCRIPTION:The Tate-Voloch conjecture is a statement about p-adic distance from torsion points to subvarieties in a semi-abelian variety defined over C_p. The use of Galois equations on torsion points by Pink and Rossler to prove the Manin-Mumford conjecture can be adapted to prove that conjecture in the case where both the semi-abelian variety and its subvariety are defined over a finite extension of Q_p.In this talk\, we will present such a proof\, and try to give an insight on how this proof differs from the model-theoretic one given by Scanlon.

SUMMARY:Pregeometries and definable groups
DESCRIPTION:We describe a recent program for analyzing definable sets and groups in certain model theoretic settings. Those settings include:(a) o-minimal structures (M\, P)\, where M is an ordered group and P is a real closed field defined on a bounded interval (joint work with Peterzil)\,(b) tame expansions (M\, P) of a real closed field M by a predicate P\, such as expansions with o-minimal open core (work in progress with Gunaydin and Hieronymi).The analysis of definable groups first goes through a local level\, where a pertinent notion of a pregeometry and generic elements is each time introduced.
