SUMMARY:Counting points vs. counting extensions
DESCRIPTION:In this talk\, I will explain how to relate the two counting problems in the title by generalizing the McKay correspondence to number-theoretic base fields\, that is\, local fields and number fields. Over local fields\, generalizing the McKay correspondence by Batyrev and Denef-Loeser\, one can relate stringy invariants of quotient varieties to mass formulas of extensions of local fields. Over number fields\, using the local result and a heuristic argument\, one can (less tightly than in the local case) relate Manin’s conjecture on rational points of Fano varieties to Malle’s conjecture on extensions of number fields.

SUMMARY:The p-adic analog of Artin-Schreier Theorem - revisited (II)
DESCRIPTION:A famous Theorem by Artin and Schreier characterizes the real closed fields as being those fields which have a finite non-trivial absolute Galois group. Instances of p-adic analogs of this Theorem are known (Neukirch\, Pop\, Koenigsmann\, Efrat)\, but there is much more to this story. Namely I will give a ‘minimalistic’ p-adic analog\, which as in the Artin-Schreier Theorem\, invoves only finite groups. This aspect of the story relates to the birational p-adic section conjecture\, etc.

SUMMARY:Comptage en théorie des groupes et imaginaires p-adiques
DESCRIPTION:Travail en commun avec Ehud Hrushovski et Ben Martin.

SUMMARY:Around the Canonical Base Property
DESCRIPTION:The canonical base property (CBP) is a property of finite rank theories\, which was introduced by Pillay and whose formulation was motivated by results of Campana in complex geometry. The main feature of such a property is that it provides a dichotomy for types of rank one\, and in consequence one can reproduce Hrushovski’s proof of Mordell-Lang for function fields in characteristic zero with considerable simplifications. In this talk\, I will motivate (via Mordell-Lang) the statement of the CBP and describe some results around the CBP\, in particular on definable groups.

SUMMARY:On the existential theory of equicharacteristic henselian valued fields
DESCRIPTION:The first order theory of a henselian valued field of residue characteristic zero is well-understood through the celebrated Ax-Kochen-Ershov principle\, which states that it is completely determined by the theory of the residue field and the theory of the value group. For henselian valued fields of positive residue characteristic\, no such general principle is known. I will report on joint work with Will Anscombe in which we study (parts of) the theory of equicharacteristic henselian valued fields and prove an Ax-Kochen-Ershov principle for existential (and slightly more general) sentences. I will also discuss applications to the definability of henselian valuation rings and to the existential decidability (Hilbert’s tenth problem) of the local field F_q((t))\, which was proven by Denef and Schoutens assuming resolution of singularities.

SUMMARY:Lebesgue measure and integration theory on arbitrary real closed fields
DESCRIPTION:We establish for the category of semialgebraic sets and functions on arbitrary real closed fields a full Lebesgue measure and integration theory such that the main results from the classical setting hold. The construction involves methods from model theory\, o-minimal geometry\, valuation theory and the theory of ordered abelian groups. We set up the construction in such a way that it is uniquely determined by data that can be formulated completely in terms of the given real closed field. We apply our integration theory to questions on semialgebraic geometry and analysis in the non-standard setting and also to questions on parameterized integrals on the reals.

SUMMARY:Definable types in ACVF.
DESCRIPTION:Given a pair of models Kprec L of a first-order theory T\, the pair is said to be stable if the following property holds: all types over K which are realized in L are definable. Marker and Steinhorn characterized stable pairs of models of o-minimal theories as pairs K prec L where K is Dedekind complete in L. In this talk we provide a characterization of stable pairs of algebraically closed valued fields K prec L. To get a flavor of the topic\, different examples will be discussed and a brief introduction to some model-theoretic aspects of stable pairs will be given. This is a joint work with Françoise Delon.

SUMMARY:Geometric dualities and model theory
DESCRIPTION:Geometries can be given in a direct semantic way\, say as a complex or real manifold\, or more abstractly\, by their co-ordinate algebras and schemes. A duality of this kind becomes highly non-trivial in cases of schemes of arithmetic type and for non-commutative co-ordinate algebras. I will discuss these issues from model-theoretic perspective. A detailed analysis will be given to the canonical commutation relation(s) underlying quantum mechanics. Some applications will be presented.

SUMMARY:Obtaining bi-Lipschitz stratifications using valued fields
DESCRIPTION:(Work in progress\, together with Yimu Yin)One tool to describe singularities of (e.g. algebraic or analytic) subsets X of R^n or C^n are stratifications: a partition of X into finitely many ?Roestrata?R such that any two points x\, y in X within the same stratum have the ?Roesame type of neighbourhood?R. The most classical stratifications are Whitney stratifications\, which classify neighbourhoods up to homeomorphism. The strongest known stratifications are Mostowski’s bi-Lipschitz stratifications\, which classify neighbourhoods up to a bi-Lipschitz map. I will present a new way of obtaining such bi-Lipschitz stratifications\, by working in a suitable valued field (a non-standard model of R or C). Up to recently\, the existence of bi-Lipschitz stratifications was only known for sub-analytic sets. Our method works for definable sets in arbitrary polyinomially bounded o-minimal expansions of R\, i.e. in particular for quasi-analytic sets. (A similar result has also been announced by Valette.)

SUMMARY:Some applications of model theory to geometric Ramsey theory.
DESCRIPTION:In a series of papers by Alon\, Conlon\, Fox\, Gromov\, Naor\, Pach\, Pinchasi\, Radoi\, Sharir\, Sudakov\, Lafforgue\, Suk and others it is demonstrated that families of graphs with the edge relation given by a semialgebraic relation of bounded complexity satisfy much stronger regularity properties than arbitrary graphs\, and can be decomposed into very homogeneous semialgebraic pieces modulo a small mistake (for example the incidence relation between points and lines on the real plane\, or higher dimensional analogues). We show that in fact the whole theory can be developed for families of graphs whose edge relation is uniformly definable in a structure satisfying a certain model theoretic property called distality\, with respect to arbitrary generically stable measures rather than just the counting ones. Moreover\, distality characterizes these strong regularity properties. This applies in particular to definable graphs in all o-minimal and weakly o-minimal theories\, and in p-adics.Joint work with Sergei Starchenko.

SUMMARY:Degrees of strongly special subvarieties and the André-Oort conjecture.
DESCRIPTION:We give a new proof of the André-Oort conjecture under the generalised Riemann hypothesis. In fact\, we generalise the strategy pioneered by Edixhoven\, and implemented by Klingler and Yafaev\, to all special subvarieties. Thus\, we remove ergodic theory from the proof of Klingler\, Ullmo and Yafaev and replace it with tools from algebraic geometry. Our key ingredient is a lower bound for the degrees of strongly special subvarieties coming from Prasad’s volume formula for S-arithmetic quotients of semisimple groups.

SUMMARY:Model theory of right-angled buildings.
DESCRIPTION:To every right-angled Coxeter G group belongs a unique countable Tits building B(G) with infinite residues. Using a suitable language\, we study the first order theory of B(G). It has a nice axiomatization\, is omega-stable\, equational and has trivial forking. It is not n-ample\, when n is the number of generators of G. (Joint work with A. Baudisch and A. Martín Pizarro)

SUMMARY:Non-archimedean Yomdin-Gromov parametrizations and points of bounded height
DESCRIPTION:In the spirit of work by Pila-Wilkie (2006) and by Pila (2009)\, we will present bounds on the number of points of bounded height in the non-archimedean context. An important tool to make the determinant method work is provided by a non-archimedean version of the Yomdin – Gromov parameterizing lemma. We wil explain these results\, obtained in joint work with G. Comte and F. Loeser.

SUMMARY:Galois equations on torsion points and the Tate-Voloch conjecture on p-adic fields
DESCRIPTION:The Tate-Voloch conjecture is a statement about p-adic distance from torsion points to subvarieties in a semi-abelian variety defined over C_p. The use of Galois equations on torsion points by Pink and Rossler to prove the Manin-Mumford conjecture can be adapted to prove that conjecture in the case where both the semi-abelian variety and its subvariety are defined over a finite extension of Q_p.In this talk\, we will present such a proof\, and try to give an insight on how this proof differs from the model-theoretic one given by Scanlon.

SUMMARY:Pregeometries and definable groups
DESCRIPTION:We describe a recent program for analyzing definable sets and groups in certain model theoretic settings. Those settings include:(a) o-minimal structures (M\, P)\, where M is an ordered group and P is a real closed field defined on a bounded interval (joint work with Peterzil)\,(b) tame expansions (M\, P) of a real closed field M by a predicate P\, such as expansions with o-minimal open core (work in progress with Gunaydin and Hieronymi). The analysis of definable groups first goes through a local level\, where a pertinent notion of a pregeometry and generic elements is each time introduced.

SUMMARY:Valued differential fields
DESCRIPTION:We consider valued fields of equicharacteristic zero equipped with a continuous derivation. This class of structures is rather diverse\, including both monotone differential fields and asymptotic differential fields. (These terms will be defined.) Nevertheless\, some results can be established uniformly for the entire class: algebraic extensions\, construction of residue field extensions\, the Equalizer Theorem\, construction of immediate extensions\, differential-henselianity. Next I will revisit Scanlon’s thesis on the model theory of differential-henselian monotone differential fields with enough constants. Time permitting I will add some remarks on the case of asymptotic differential fields. The above is (a small part of) ongoing joint work with Matthias Aschenbrenner and Joris van der Hoeven focused on developing a model theory for differential fields of transseries.
