SUMMARY:Une perturbation stochastique de l'équation d'Allen-Cahn
DESCRIPTION:In this talk we consider a stochastically perturbed Allen-Cahn equation. Theclassical Allen-Cahn equation describes phase separation of non-conservedfields. In the so-called sharp interface limit solutions converge tosolutions of mean curvature flow. We consider here additional random effectsin form of a perturbation by a stochastic flow. We present a tightnessresult in the sharp interface limit and discuss the relation to a version ofstochastically perturbed mean curvature flow. (This is joint work withHendrik Weber from Warwick.)

SUMMARY:Atomic-to-continuum derivation in Elasticity with interface energy
DESCRIPTION:I will present an atomic-to-continuum derivation in nonlinearelasticity. The atomistic model is based on a two-body interactionenergy\, with a potential of the Lennard-Jones type. Performing apointwise Taylor expansion\, we obtain a continuum model that predictselastic energy\, sharp-interface energy and smooth-interface energy. Thisalso gives a method to describe the configuration of the atoms betweentwo consecutive sharp interfaces\, which qualitatively agrees withexperiments in Ni-Mn alloys presenting microstructure.

SUMMARY:Flambage de McKean-Vlasov

SUMMARY:Some regularity results for ultraparabolic equations
DESCRIPTION:I shall talk about some regularity results for the ultraparabolic equation\, in particular\, the C^{alpha}$ regularity of weak solutions. The problem arises from the Prandtl’s boundary layer system under the Crocco transformation. I shall also report some recent results on the backward uniqueness of ultraparabolic equations.

SUMMARY:Rigorous stability/bifurcation analysis for strong detonation waves
DESCRIPTION:We present recent results with B. Texier developing a rigorous nonlinear theory of stability and bifurcation of strong detonation waves of the full reacting Navier-Stokes (rNS) equations\, based on natural spectral stability/bifurcation conditions. We discuss in parallel recent singular perturbation results showing that in the small viscosity limit these conditions reduce to the corresponding conditions for the ZND\, or reacting Euler\, equations that are more commonly studied in the detonation literature. This yields immediately numerical verification of the (rNS) conditions through the voluminous numerical literature on (ZND).

SUMMARY:Entire solutions to equivariant elliptic systems with variational structure

SUMMARY:Quasistatic crack growth in finite elasticity
DESCRIPTION:We present a variational model for quasistatic evolutions of brittle cracks in hyperelastic bodies\, in the context of finite elasticity. All existence results on this subject that can be found in the mathematical literature were obtained using energy densities with polynomial growth. This is not compatible with the standard assumption in finite elasticity that the strain energy diverges as the determinant of the deformation gradient tends to zero. On the contrary\, we consider a wide class of energy densities satisfying this property

SUMMARY:Global dynamics beyond the ground energy for the nonlinear Klein-Gordon equation
DESCRIPTION:We study global behavior of the nonlinear Klein-Gordon equation with a focusing cubic power in three dimensions\, in the energy space under the restriction of radial symmetry and an energy upper bound slightly above that of the ground state. We give a complete classification of the solutions into 9 non-empty sets according to whether they blow-up\, scatter to 0\, or scatter to the ground states\, in the forward and backward time directions\, and the splitting is given in terms of the stable and the unstable manifoldsof the ground states. This is joint work with Wilhelm Schlag.

SUMMARY:Inverse Transport Problems and Photoacoustics
DESCRIPTION:Inverse transport consists of reconstructing the optical parameters in a transportequation from knowledge of a measurement operator. We review several uniqueness andstability results obtained in the context of various boundary measurements as they arisee.g. in optical tomography\, a medical imaging modality. Accurate numerical reconstructionsobtained by carefully capturing the singularities of the measurement operator are also brieflypresented. In many practical settings\, the typical boundary measurements available in inversetransport do not allow us to reconstruct the optical parameters with sufficient resolution. In the second part of the talk\, I present recent results obtained for the inverse trans-port problem with internal controls as they arise in the application of photoacoustic to-mography\, a recent hybrid medical imaging modality that combines the large contrastobserved in optical parameters with the high resolution of ultrasounds.

SUMMARY:Cloaking and Singular Riemannian Metrics
DESCRIPTION:We describe recent theoretical and experimental progress on making objects invisible to detection by electromagnetic waves\, acoustic waves and matter waves. For the case of electromagnetic waves\, Maxwell’s equations have transformation laws that allow for design of electromagnetic materials that steer light around a hidden region\, returning it to its original path on the far side. Not only would observers be unaware of the contents of the hidden region\, they would not even be aware that something was being hidden. The object\, which would have no shadow\, is said to be cloaked. We recount some of the history of the subject and discuss some of the mathematical issues involved\, in particular the use of singular Riemannian metrics.

SUMMARY:Kinetic equation for the weakly nonlinear Schroedinger equation
DESCRIPTION:Since the basic work of Peierls it is common consensus thatweakly nonlinear wave equations with random initial data can be wellapproximated by a kinetic equation. I will explain the precise conjecture.I will also discuss my recent joint work with J. Lukkarinen\, where wecontrol the kinetic limit in special cases for the lattice nonlinearSchroedinger equation.
