SUMMARY:From Inference to Generative Diffusion: How Deep Networks Uncover Structure in Hierarchical Data
DESCRIPTION:Our understanding of how neural networks learn from structured data is caught between two extremes: theory largely relies on high-dimensional random data\, which lacks any structure\, while experiments rely on real-world benchmarks\, whose structure is not understood. This talk takes the middle road and works with a synthetic data model that is simple enough to be controlled yet rich enough to be informative. Sequences are generated by a branching process on a tree\, so that elements inherit nested correlations across all scales\, in a manner reminiscent of language or images\, while the Bayes-optimal predictor remains known exactly. This provides a ground truth against which trained models can be compared\, both in what they learn and in what they produce. In a first part\, we ask how the structure is learned. Using a filtering procedure that controls the range of correlations\, we show that transformers recover the exact inference algorithm\, incorporating larger scales sequentially\, in time during training and in space across attention layers. In a second part\, we ask whether the structure\, once learned\, can be reproduced. Turning to diffusion models\, we identify a phase of biased generalization\, during which the test loss keeps decreasing while generated samples drift anomalously close to the training data. We quantify this bias by comparing networks trained on disjoint datasets\, demonstrate its presence on real images\, and use the exact scores available on tree-based data to characterize its onset. The mechanism is again sequential: coarse structure is learned early and independently of the specific data\, while finer features are resolved later in a way that increasingly depends on individual training samples. As a consequence\, early stopping at the test loss minimum may be insufficient for privacy-critical applications.

SUMMARY:Automath! On the Origin of False Proofs by Means of Bugs in Proof Assistants\, Yannick Foster
DESCRIPTION:Proof assistants have entered mainstream mathematical discourse so fast that now they are almost silently accepted as the ultimate guardians of correct proofs. Both the recent forced Euler blowup result by Buckmaster and Alpöge and the solution to the Navier-Stokes problem announced by OpenAI come with proofs verified in the Lean proof assistant\, with code almost entirely written using LLMs. Only six months ago an experiment led by Tristan Stérin showed that LLMs are effective at finding bugs in proof assistants: several bugs were found both in Lean and the Rocq proof assistant. As a demonstration\, Ramana Kumar has published a proof of the Collatz Conjecture in Lean\, making use of a bug. These experiments have been followed by a flurry of bugs in Lean and Rocq found by Daniel Selsam at OpenAI. In this talk\, I will discuss the tension between proof assistants as guardians for LLM-coded proofs and as vulnerable target for LLM-guided bug search. In this talk I will discuss what a false proof is\, what a bug in a proof assistant is\, and give a genealogy of bugs that have been found this year\, focusing on what features of proof assistants they usually occur in. I will conclude with some thoughts on how we can have and increase trust in results developed in proof assistants.\n \n

SUMMARY:Aicha Ben Dhia (CFM) et Théo Leblanc (Ceremade)

SUMMARY:Théorie de Morse\, pantalons et jupes

SUMMARY:Équations diophantiennes et cohomologie galoisienne

SUMMARY:Guy Gilboa - How to Encode World Knowledge?
DESCRIPTION:Foundation models are a key platform which implicitly encodes world knowledge. In this talk we first focus on vision-language models\, such as CLIP\, and investigate their geometric behavior and logic behind the high-dimensional feature encoding. For instance\, we find that as image or text become more rare and distinct they are encoded further from the center of the embedding. We explain why InfoNCE loss leads to that behavior. We also find out empirically that each modality can be well modeled statistically as admitting a multivariate Gaussian distribution. This finding is then proved formally\, where we show InfoNCE asymptotically induces Gaussian statistics. Finally\, we connect two major image foundation models – encoders and generators\, through a universal normal embedding hypothesis. A surprising consequence of this hypothesis is demonstrated\, where generative diffusion « noise » contains semantic data which can be accessed by linear probing for either classification or editing. This talk is based on 6 recent papers in the group published at ICML 2025\, ICLR 2026 and CVPR 2026.

SUMMARY:CANCELED - Helmut Abels – Diffuse Interface Models and their Sharp Interface Limits
DESCRIPTION:CANCELED – For personal reasons\, Helmut Abels has unfortunately been forced to cancel his seminar. – CANCELED \n\n\n\nSpeaker: Helmut Abels (Universität Regensburg) \n\n\n\nInterfaces separating two or more species or components of a material are omnipresent in applications in the sciences. Nowadays there are two main classes of models to describe interfaces\, both from a theoretical and practical point of view: In classical so-called « sharp interface models » the species or components under consideration fill disjoint domains that are separated by lower dimensional surfaces of a certain regularity. On the other hand in « diffuse interface models » a partial mixing of the species or components on a small length scale is taken into account\, which leads to an interfacial layer of small but positive thickness. This has the advantage that the interfaces do not need to be resolved explicitly and singularities in the interfaces can be described consistently.  \n\n\n\nIn the first part of the talk we will give an overview of some basic diffuse interface models with applications to material sciences. Moreover\, we will discuss some analytic results on the relation between diffuse and sharp interface models\, when the interfacial thickness of the diffuse interface tends to zero. The analysis is based on formally matched asymptotic expansions (in a rigorous manner) together with uniform estimates for the linearized operator. In this part we will focus on the Allen-Cahn equation as basic model. \n\n\n\nIn the second part we will discuss a Navier-Stokes/Allen-Cahn system\, which describes the flow of two macroscopically immiscible viscous incompressible fluid\, separated by a diffuse interface. We will present some recent results on novel higher-order estimates for the sharp interface limit of this system. With the aid of a suitable weight taking the distance to the interface and the interfacial thickness into account we obtain optimal regularity estimates\, which are uniformy in the interfacial thickness. This enables to improve previous convergence results in two space dimensions significantly and extend results to three space dimensions. This is a joint-work with Mingwen Fei\, Yadong Liu\, and Maximilian Moser.

SUMMARY:Deep Learning as Neural Low-Degree Filtering: A Spectral Theory of Hierarchical Feature Learning
DESCRIPTION:Understanding how deep neural networks learn useful internal representations from data remains a central open problem in the theory of deep learning. We introduce Neural Low-Degree Filtering (Neural LoFi)\, a stylized limit of gradient-based training in which hierarchical feature learning becomes an explicit iterative spectral procedure. In this limit\, the dynamics at each layer decouple: given the current representation\, the next layer selects directions with maximal accessible low-degree correlation to the label. This yields a tractable surrogate mechanism for deep learning\, together with a natural kernel-space interpretation. Neural LoFi provides a mathematically explicit framework for studying multi-layer feature learning beyond the lazy regime. It predicts how representations are selected layer by layer\, explains how emergence of concepts arises with given sample complexity\,and gives a concrete mechanism by which depth progressively constructs new features from old ones through low-degree compositionality. We complement the theory with mechanistic experiments on fully connected and convolutional architectures\, showing that Neural LoFi improves over lazy random-feature baselines\, recovers meaningful structured filters\, and predicts representations aligned with early gradient-descent feature discovery with real datasets.

SUMMARY:Information-estimation geometry: a scale space view of prior probability models
DESCRIPTION:Solving most image processing tasks\, such as denoising\, deblurring\, inpainting\, etc\, require explicitly or implicitly a prior probability model of natural images. Classically\, both learning (by maximizing likelihood) and using (via Bayes’ rule) such prior models are intractable due to the curse of dimensionality. Diffusion models take a different approach\, where the prior density is replaced by a family of score vector fields across noise levels. They have led to impressive success in generative modeling\, but the learned density is not explicit nor is it readily usable as a prior for solving inverse problems. In this talk\, I will show how to bridge this gap by adopting a scale-space representation of the prior density itself. This leads to a procedure for learning normalized density functions from data.  The resulting prior can be used in inverse problems to efficiently access the normalized posterior density\, its mean\, and draw posterior samples. Further\, the scale space gives access to geometric properties of the learned probability distribution that have both information- and estimation-theoretic interpretations. I will show how this can be used to test the common hypothesis that natural images lie on a low-dimensional manifold and define a perceptual distance function between images that predicts human judgments.

SUMMARY:Convexity in Whitney Problems
DESCRIPTION:Suppose E is a compact subset of R^n\, and we are given a function f\, mapping E to the real numbers. How can we tell if the function lies on a smooth convex function? Can we construct an almost optimal\, smooth\, convex interpolant of the function? These are examples of Whitney-type extension and trace problems; while theoretical\, they are driven by practical questions of interpolation of data\, where convexity is a natural constraint. I will begin with an answer to these questions by presenting work of mine proving there is a Finiteness Principle for the non-linear space of strongly convex functions in $C^{1\,1}(\mathbb{R}^n)$. This work is the first attempt to understand the constrained interpolation problem for convex functions in $C^{1\,1}(\mathbb{R}^n)$. We will spend time discussing useful techniques and tools from analysis as well as important open problems in the field.

SUMMARY:Hélène Mathis - Modélisation d'écoulements diphasiques compressibles

SUMMARY:Learning Monge Maps with Constrained Drifting Models
DESCRIPTION:The estimation of optimal transport maps (a.k.a. Monge maps) is a central problem in optimal transport literature. Recent observations reveal that the flow map of the Wasserstein gradient flow of the relative entropy closely approximates—though does not exactly equal—the Monge map between a given source distribution and a Gaussian target. In this work\, we demonstrate how the evolution equation governing this flow map can be corrected to form a constrained gradient flow that provably converges to the true Monge map. When the maps are parametrized as gradients of convex models (e.g. ICNN)\, we show that the resulting optimization scheme can be interpreted as a L²-natural gradient descent in the parameter space\, and that this approach is further connected to the recently introduced drifting generative models. On toy experiments\, we empirically illustrate the clear advantage of using that L²-natural gradient instead of the Euclidean for estimating Monge maps in this framework. \n\n\n\nJoint work with  T. SUMMARY:ENS-Data Science colloquium - Rebecca Willett : How do simple rotations affect the implicit bias of Adam?
DESCRIPTION:Adaptive gradient methods such as Adam and Adagrad are widely used in = machine learning\, yet their effect on the generalization of learned = models =E2=80=93 relative to methods like gradient descent =E2=80=93 = remains poorly understood. Prior work on binary classification suggests = that Adam exhibits a =E2=80=9Crichness bias\,=E2=80=9D which can help it = learn nonlinear decision boundaries closer to the Bayes-optimal decision = boundary relative to gradient descent. However\, the coordinate-wise = preconditioning scheme employed by Adam renders the overall method = sensitive to orthogonal transformations of feature space. We show that = this sensitivity can manifest as a reversal of Adam=E2=80=99s = competitive advantage: even small rotations of the underlying data = distribution can make Adam forfeit its richness bias and converge to a = linear decision boundary that is farther from the Bayes-optimal decision = boundary than the one learned by gradient descent. To alleviate this = issue\, we show that a recently proposed reparameterization method =E2=80=93= which applies an orthogonal transformation to the optimization = objective =E2=80=93 endows any first-order method with equivariance to = data rotations\, and we empirically demonstrate its ability to restore = Adam=E2=80=99s bias towards rich decision boundaries. This is joint work = with Adela DePavia and Vasileios Charisopoulos. \n\n\n\n \n\n\n\nThese seminars are being made possible through the support of the CFM-ENS Chair « Modèles et Sciences des Données ». \n\n\n\nThe organizers: Giulio Biroli\, Alex Cayco Gajic\, Bruno Loureiro\, Stéphane Mallat\, Gabriel Peyré.
