Missions

The DMA is both one of the 15 departments of the ENS and a joint research laboratory ENS / CNRS (UMR 8553).

All members of the DMA, whether professors or lecturers (maîtres de conférences) from Paris universities assigned to the ENS for a fixed period of time, CNRS researchers or post-doctoral fellows, contribute to student training within the inter-university training program, the ENS’s mathematics teaching structure. They give lectures and are involved in the supervision of students, particularly in the form of tutoring: each student is assigned a tutor who will be his or her privileged contact throughout the course. They also supervise the organization of seminars and workgroups, as well as student papers and presentations.

Committees

Aware of the social and environmental issues involved in teaching and research, the Department of Mathematics and Applications has set up a “parity” committee and an “environment” committee.

Admission

There are three possibilities to be admitted to study mathematics at the ENS.

ENS admission exam

This competitive exam recruits mainly after a 2 years training in preparatory classes to elite schools, designated as the CPGE. Independent candidates have to prove that they graduated out of secondary education with the Baccalauréat or an equivalent diploma. Students having acquired a diploma rating up to 240 ECTS units are not allowed to participate.

International selection

Each year the École normale supérieure organizes an international selection allowing about thirty of the most promising international students to follow a two or three-year programme at the ENS. They receive a monthly stipend of approximately 1,000 Euros and can rent accommodation on the ENS campus.

Written application

The Department of Mathematics and Applications at the ENS is recruiting 6 to 7 students who are passionate about mathematics and wish to complete the ENS diploma. This offer is targeted to students at the L2 or L3 level, and who are not participating in the same year in the ENS admission exam. The successful applicants have 3 years to obtain the ENS diploma.

Partner institutions

The DMA exists thanks to the commitment of five partner institutions: Sorbonne Université, Université Paris-Sud, Université Paris Cité, Université Paris-Dauphine - PSL, Université Sorbonne Paris Nord.
